Farming Lesson: Look Beyond Gender to Skills, Talents

Annie’s ProjectWhile growing up on my family’s farm in Minnesota, we each were expected to be involved in the operation. Our assigned responsibilities were not based upon gender, but rather they aligned with our skills and talents and allowed us to learn and contribute at the same time.

Farming and ranching have provided opportunities for women to be partners in their operations. At Farm Credit Services of America, we understand the value women bring to the workplace and to our Board of Directors. Just as we encourage the career development of women on our teams, we also support women’s development on the farm or ranch through our sponsorship of Annie’s Project.

Across the four states we serve, slightly more than 55 percent of our teammates are women. Women also serve in leadership roles at FCSAmerica. Many of our employees grew up on farms, ranches, or in rural areas, where women were and continue to be vital to the success of their agricultural operations and communities.

We are honored to be awarded the 2015 Omaha’s Best Place to Work for the Advancement of Women. It’s a fitting award to receive during Women’s History Month. We thoughtfully and purposefully create a work environment that allows all employees to reach their greatest potential and provide developmental opportunities that are a combination of experiences, exposure and education.

We believe in the value women contribute to agriculture and are honored to be recognized for helping women to grow in their careers.
