Supporting Hunger Relief in South Dakota Schools and Shelters

Meals That Make a Difference

In South Dakota, two organizations are making a profound impact by addressing hunger and nutrition – one classroom and one shelter at a time. Sioux Falls Jefferson High School and Rapid City’s Working Against Violence, Inc. (WAVI) are each tackling food insecurity to create brighter futures for the people they serve. Supported by the Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) Working Here Fund grant, these initiatives are uniting communities around a shared mission: to provide nourishment, stability and hope.

Nourishing Academic Success

At Sioux Falls Jefferson High School, hunger has been an invisible barrier for students in alternative learning programs. Many teachers have taken it upon themselves to provide snacks and food for students who need a boost.

With a grant from FCSAmerica, Jefferson High School is creating the Academic Village Food Pantry, an initiative that will not only help feed students but also improve attendance and academic achievement. The pantry will be accessible year-round, including during summer school, ensuring that students facing life challenges have the resources they need to succeed.

Harvesting Hope for Survivors

Founded in 1978, WAVI addresses hunger as part of its mission to support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. With the launch of Project Harvest – "Harvesting Hope, Nourishing Lives", WAVI is providing three nutritious meals daily to adults and children in its 24-hour emergency shelter. Survivors not residing in the shelter can also access emergency food boxes, ensuring they have the resources to rebuild their lives.

WAVI’s efforts are particularly impactful for Native American and underserved communities in the Black Hills region. Approximately 80% of the clients seeking shelter at WAVI are Native American, and 65% of the overall clientele are people of color. With a diverse staff dedicated to cultural sensitivity, WAVI provides tailored support to those it serves, breaking cycles of abuse and poverty.

United by a Common Goal

Together, Sioux Falls Jefferson High School and WAVI are proving that a meal can do more than fill an empty stomach—it can change a life. For students, a stocked pantry is a reason to show up, stay engaged and learn. For survivors, a meal can be the first step toward independence and healing.
