Advancing Ag Education and Leadership
Wyoming’s rich agricultural tradition is being cultivated for the future, thanks to two inspiring initiatives supported by Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica). These projects exemplify how strategic investments can elevate agricultural education and leadership, strengthening the connection between rural communities and modern agriculture.
Building on a Tradition, Expanding Impact
In 1986, the Wyoming Agricultural Leadership Council (WALC) began its journey as a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing leaders who advocate for agriculture and rural communities. As WALC prepared to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2024, it embraced the milestone with forward-looking initiatives.
WALC's flagship Wyoming L.E.A.D. program has long been a cornerstone of leadership development, offering an intensive 16–18-month training experience for adult farmers, ranchers and agribusiness professionals. With grant funds from FCSAmerica, WALC expanded its reach.
To kick off its anniversary celebration, WALC hosted a two-day Wyoming Ag Leadership Forum. This event brought together 270 alumni of the Wyoming L.E.A.D. program, alongside new participants, including college-age students and agribusiness professionals. Attendees sharpened their leadership skills, explored opportunities in agriculture and forged valuable connections.
Hands-On Learning for Tomorrow’s Innovators
At Tongue River High School in Sheridan County, students are getting a head start on agricultural innovation, thanks to a grant from FCSAmerica. This grant will help build a 30’ x 40’ pole barn with an attached lean-to greenhouse – a state-of-the-art facility designed to blend agricultural education with real-world experience.
The barn will serve as a hub for hands-on learning, giving students an active role in every phase of its construction, from permitting and hammering nails to collaborating with local businesses on technical standards. Beyond its initial build, the structure will support a wide range of agricultural education programs, fostering skills in construction, sustainability and innovation.
