Cultivating Spaces for Growth and Learning
Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica) continues to build Iowa’s agricultural future through impactful investments in ag education. By revitalizing community spaces and enhancing learning opportunities, these initiatives foster growth, innovation and a shared passion for agriculture across the state.
Revitalizing Fairgrounds for Community Engagement
The Guthrie County Fairgrounds saw a significant transformation with the construction of a new show ring facility. This project replaced the deteriorating structure with a multifunctional, open-sided building equipped with modern amenities, including bleachers, a picnic area, a 4-H club kitchen, restrooms and a livestock office. More than a space for livestock shows, this venue is a year-round resource for all types of community events.
In Denison, the Crawford County Fairgrounds underwent a major upgrade with a new show ring and pig barn to replace the current aging facility. Designed for versatility, the taller and more functional structure now supports a wider variety of events and activities including livestock and horse shows.
These improvements ensure that the fairgrounds remain a vibrant community hub for agricultural education and beyond, providing opportunities for generations to come.
Creating Hands-On Learning Experiences
The Pella Christian FFA chapter is enriching student education with plans to build a greenhouse adjacent to the high school. This facility will support hands-on courses like plant science and greenhouse management, giving students the opportunity to grow and sell plants and donate grown produce to the community’s food pantry while learning about the science and business of agriculture. By integrating practical skills into the curriculum, the program prepares students for future careers in agriculture and related industries.
Bringing Agriculture to the Classroom
At the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds in Davenport, River Bend Ag in the Classroom hosted its annual two-day event, engaging all third-grade students from the Davenport Community School District. With a focus on increasing youth’s awareness of the importance of agriculture’s role in daily life, the event incorporated STEM-based lessons and activities that educators can adapt for their classrooms. Alongside presentations from local producers and vendors, students rotated between stations to learn about dairy, corn, soybeans and other major commodities. Programs like these connect young learners to agriculture, nurturing their curiosity and appreciation for its significance in their lives.
