How I got started in agriculture

Michael: I grew up on a farm and always loved it. I went to Iowa State University to get my degree and came home to work as an agronomist before I began farming full-time.

Our relationship with Farm Credit

Katie: We have a very good relationship with Farm Credit. Our loan officer is a big part of our decision-making process. She brings expertise to our operation and always makes it easy for us by meeting after work hours or setting up an appointment that really works for our family.

Working with a cooperative

Michael: The cash-back dividends are one of the reasons I appreciate working with a cooperative like Farm Credit. If I succeed, they succeed. It’s a true partnership and when we win, we win together.

What I enjoy most about farming

Michael: What I enjoy most about farming is the freedom. Being your own boss, you control your destiny. If you make a bad decision it’s on you, and if you make a good decision you get to reap the benefits.

Advice to other young and beginning farmers

Michael: My advice to other farmers getting started is to do something that helps you build equity. Whether it’s a piece of land or a livestock facility, you can’t get anywhere without equity. Find your niche and go for it.
