Why I chose agriculture
My grandfather farmed, my dad farmed, and by the time I was 14 I decided I wanted to work in agriculture and farm if I could. I had a goal in my head and thought that if we ever got there, we’d really be in good shape. Well, that goal keeps moving up.
Our business approach
We don’t really chase opportunities, but they seem to come to us. Generally the best opportunities come when times aren’t especially good. We don’t bite off more than we can chew, and there’s always room to get better at what you do.
Our vision for the future
A critical point in a farm business is when family labor is no longer enough to handle the business. We have passed that point now. Our daughter has joined us in the business. She handles several field operations, deals with crop insurance planning and likes working with spreadsheets. She also brings one sorely needed commodity – energy!
What I enjoy about farming
I like the idea of making something out of nothing, to work with a piece of dirt and grow a good crop, to take a piece of steel and make something useful out of it. I also like that we have a positive impact on our local economy, like providing jobs for the men who haul our beets or corn.
Why we work with FCSAmerica
We’re in a capital intensive business, dealing with big numbers and a lot of variables and up and down cycles. Over time we’ve developed a relationship with our financial officer that’s more like a partnership. He’s familiar with our operation and he knows our track record. We know we can count on him. And we’re on a first-name basis with everybody at the office.
